How to Surf Fish

What Do You Need to Surf Fish?

There are a few essentials needed for catching fish from the beach. All of these pieces of fishing equipment can generally be purchased at your local fishing and tackle shop. Here is what you will need:

1. Saltwater Fishing Reel

2. Surf Fishing Rod

3. Strong Fishing Line

4. Ocean Leader

5. Weights

6. Bait

Now that we have listed out the items needed, we will go into depth about each piece of equipment.

First, a Saltwater fishing reel is one that will not rust when coming into contact with saltwater. Most reels do not have the type of material to withstand saltwater and sand, but as long as these reels are rinsed off after use, they will work for several years.

A surf fishing rod is significantly longer and stronger than a river or pond fishing rod. The length helps the fisherman cast a further distance, while the strength allows the rod to pull in larger fish that are often caught in the ocean.

Fishing line is another important part of surf fishing. We suggest using braided line that is at least 40 pound strength.

A leader is also needed for surf fishing. A leader allows you to attach multiple hooks and a weight to the end of the rod. Also, a leader is generally thicker and stronger than the rest of the fishing line to prevent fish with teeth from biting through the line.

The stronger the undertow and larger the waves, the heavier the weight needed. Weights are needed when surf fishing to keep your bait from being dragged along the bottom of the ocean. For medium sized waves (2-4ft.), use a 2oz. weight.

Obviously bait is needed to catch fish. We will discuss the bait needed below.

What is the Best Time to Surf Fish?

The best time to surf fish is in the morning between 5:30 A.M. - 8:30 A.M. or in the late afternoon from 4:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. This is the best time to catch fish. If you are fishing for sharks, the best time is between 6:30 P.M. and 10:30 P.M.

What is the Best Rig for Surf Fishing?

The best rig for surf fishing is a steel two hook leader with a weight clamp at the end. These leaders are generally around 3 feet long and have two extended steel arms with hooks. The first arm is located at the top of the rig, and the second is located about halfway down. Each flimsy steel arm has a clamp designed for easy hook attachment. The bottom of the rig has a clamp for a weight. This design allows the weight to sink into the sand and the two hooks to float in the water to give the bait a live look.

Where is the Best Place to Surf Fish?

The best place to surf fish is in an area where the sand bar extends out further than normal. Normally in these areas the undertow has created a deeper pool where fish like to feed. Fishing in the deep portions is best for surf fishing.
